Wine - The old debate, new versus old.

Since New world wines began being exported in the 1980's the debate has raged about what is better, new versus old. The argument today is not as strong as it was thirty years ago, but it still exists.
As the Old world populations moved around the globe they took their beloved vines with them, and as a result Old world varietals were being created all over the globe. With more sunlight and more sugar being produced in the grape and different soil types new flavour profiles were born. No one vineyard in the same country makes a similar wine, nevermind different countries around the world.
Today the internet has reopened the discussion as online wine merchants source product from vineyards across the globe. There is a trend from standard wines online to fine wines, and French wines online are benefiting as more discerning consumers move away from the New world. There is no difference though in quality between a great Australian fine red wine bought online and Italian wine. The quality is no different because Australian, South African wines have the same very high standards that French and Italian wines have.
You are more likely though to find an Australian wine online or New Zealand wine online wearing a screw cap closure rather than a cork. The New world wines have invested more in technology than certain French or Italian vineyards.
It is fair to say though that French wines online tend to have older vines than Australian, but again the quality is differences are very difficult to determine.

French wines online do tend to have a better label and bottle aesthetic but this only gives a perception of quality improvements. In blind tastes made from wine bought online most consumers cannot tell the difference. If however online consumers compare a French or Spanish bottle online with a comparative Australian wine online 7 out of 10 people would believe the New world wine is higher quality. The reason we believe is linked to cuisine, and therefore the belief that a finer a countries food the finer the wine.

Online wine merchants are catching on quickly to the link between fine wine and food. Online wine consumers are choosing new brands and varietals by being introduced to the concept of matching foods to wines. The growth of seafood has helped drive Australian white wines online and even certain spicy foods are complimented by rich red wines online.

Whether New world of Old world is better is not important, what is important is that online wine consumers enjoy wines from around the world. An Australian wine is no better or worse than a similar French wine online.
