Kegel exercises - how to preclude health problems
Dr. Arnold Kegel was the first to develop special exercises to exercise the pelvic floor muscles, particularly pubococcygeus muscles (PC muscles). These muscles are involved in urination, bowel movements, sexual intercourse and, in women, during childbirth.
Aging, surgery, labour, excessive weight gain and particular medical conditions can trigger weakening of the muscles, resulting in urinary and bowel incontinence. In men, weakening of the pelvis can also bring on premature ejaculation. In both males and females, the debilitated pelvic floor muscles can cause a drop in ability to orgasm.
So, Kegel exercises are used for various purposes. This type of exercising is considered the first point of a management program to handle stress or urinary and fecal incontinence. The pc muscles engaged by this type of exercising include the anal and urinary sphincter. In males, the exercising can "lift" the testicles. Sometimes the results are noticeable in several weeks after the regular exercising, but some men notice their testicles lifting in no time.
As well as any muscle of the body, the pelvic floor muscles, if not engaged or "worked out" on a regular basis, weaken and eventually atrophy. Post-menopausal females usually face vaginal atrophy. In females, lack of muscle tone in the pelvic area can cause vaginal or uterine prolapse, also called fallen womb.
The conditions can be rather uncomfortable and sometimes require surgical treatment. But, the main cause is a collapse of the pelvic floor that keeps the inner organs in place.Kegel exercises can prevent these conditions and can aid in treating them, too.To insure you are aware how to contract the pc muscles, try to stop the stream of urine when you are going to the washroom. This is the basic movement. Or try another method: having put a finger into the vagina, try to compress the muscles. Try to feel your vagina become tight and your pelvic floor move up. Afterwards stop contracting your muscles and feel your pelvic floor move downwards to the initial position.
But do not get into the habit of stopping the urine flow. Doing Kegel exercises with a full bladder or while urinating can actually debilitate the muscles. It can also result in incomplete emptying of the bladder, thus putting a female at risk of a urinary tract infection.Kegel exercises are to be done on a regular basis to achieve the best results. A set of Kegel exercises for men and women can be discovered at kegel-exercise.org. Remember it is better to preclude a medical condition than to handle it.
