Nevada Adventure: A short guide to riding along Route 95

The western US state of Nevada has long been a tourist destination for those seeking something very specific from their holidays - be it the shows and casinos of Las Vegas, or the Sierra Nevada mountains. However with more us eager to make the most of our time abroad, after spending a few days and nights in Las Vegas, Route 95 is a great road to hit in order to make the most of the natural side of the state - and there is plenty to see along the way.

With increasing cheap city breaks to Las Vegas, the entertainment capital of the world is the perfect place to start you journey. Famed for its casinos in and around the Strip, many of the casinos are incorporated with hotels meaning that the city is one of the best in terms of choice for accommodation. Aside from the shows and casinos, Las Vegas is also home to a number of social. historical and cultural focal points including its Arts District and the Atomic Testing Museum.

Once you have had your fill of Las Vegas, after being on Route 95 you'll get to the fringe of the Death Valley National Park after just over 100 miles as it spills from California into Esmeralda County. Death Valley is known for its harsh and dramatic landscape, and the unique flora and fauna that has adapted to live in the area, including: coyotes, cougars and pupfish. If you plan to stop off in the area, ranger-guided tours and four-wheel drive rental will allow you to get to areas that are harder to access.

Following Route 95 ever-further northward and you will soon reach the edge of the Inyo National Forest. Like Death Valley, most of the forest is technically contained within California state but more than 60,000 acres spills over into Nevada. It may be surprising to some that an area that is so well known for its barrenness and wind shaped geology can also be home to dense forest, but the Inyo National Forest is even regarded as an ancient wilderness. It is here that the oldest non-clonal tree (and organism) in the world has been recorded - Methuselah, a Great Basin Bristlecone Pine estimated to be 4,841 years old.

Lake Tahoe is the second deepest freshwater lake in America at 1,645 ft and is surrounded by numerous mountains and impressive scenery. Consequently the area is a popular destination for tourist eager to hit the slopes and to explore the surrounding area. The Tahoe region is home to casinos and restaurants, while the mountains and lakes give recreation opportunities for skiers, mountain bikers and scuba diving.
